About
Global environmental deprivation, a phenomenon arose as a result of a
pandemic, where individuals found themselves in a situation of prolonged
isolation and monotonous everyday life, where their proper space is no longer
associated with the outside. It has led to a violation of the normal mental
spatial-time coordinates.
Torn out of the usual “external-internal” balance, out of the spatial-social
context, the places of staying turned into hospital wards, into spaceships,
lockdown defective ecosystems, unusual for existence.
When the external no longer belongs to the individual, when contact with out
is impossible, the decision to share the proper space to an agent of the
external world in the form of a "room-garden".
The fragile co-relations system between the individual and the non-human
agent (Human - Petunia correlation) is based on an agreement of the terms
and conditions. Fulfillments of a condition involves data logging. Transformed
into sound as an interaction mechanism, they are designed to contain
conditions and stimulate growth.
Demonstrating the flow of change by the growing, army of Petunias primarily
structures and apparently disciplines human time.
In addition, by demanding more space, spreading and multiplying the Green,
plants transform lockdown spatial into the potential space for everything,
displaying cell division as the process of capturing space by green pixels and
turn the physical room into a Chroma key concept.
Bio
Natalia Balabanova (born Salavat, Russia, 1976, lives and works in St. Petersburg) Bachelor's
degree in Sociology (BashSU), ICA (Moscow), ArtEZ (Academy of Arts, Netherlands), works with
everyday experience, context, objects and their concepts and their representations. Which she
plays out in multi-part installations, often accompanied by video, photography and sound.
In these installations, she often uses the algorithms, mental mapping and semantic schemes,
numerous objects are linked into the schemes through a non-linear narrative. This approach is not
a means to an end, but in itself is the subject of work, which focuses on the opposition of
materiality and our concept of it.
The installations often arises through a reaction to the space for which it was created, works are
temporary and site-specific. In the works the artist regularly use augmented reality as a mobile
application, or the very one idea of being added. This allows it to further blur the physical and
mental.
Context always plays a leading role, often installations are the result of exact artistic interventions.
She has exhibited her installation, videos and made performances at the 6-th Moscow Biennale, in
the Museum Arnhem (Netherlands), Tretyakov State Gallery (Moscow), Dukley Art Center
(Montenegro), Moscow International University, NCCA, an executive director of the 2-nd Ural
Industrial biennale (Ekaterinburg).
